GRAND OPENINGS & RIBBON CUTTINGS

A ribbon cutting was held for Platinum Surgery Center on January 14, 2010.  The Harlingen Hispanic Chamber Embajadores and the Harlingen Area Chamber Ambassadors conducted the ceremony along with friends, special guests and members.  Everyone enjoyed food, refreshments, and networking.  Platinum Surgery Center provides outpatient surgical procedures to adults and children, specializing in: Gastroenterology, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Otorhinolaryngology, Oral Surgery, Podiatry, Pediatric Dentistry, OB/GYN, Opthamology, Orthopedic Surgery, and General Surgery.  Platinum Surgery Center is located at 2220 Pease St., across from Valley Baptist Medical Center.  For more information, call (956) 389-6000.

Action Kids Physical Therapy held an Open House and Ribbon Cutting on January 21, 2010. The Harlingen Hispanic Chamber Embajadores conducted the ribbon cutting.  Everyone enjoyed refreshments, networking and demonstrations.  At Action Kids, they utilize the latest advanced technologies in combination with proven scientific protocols in order to maximize patient outcomes by providing the missing link: motivation.  By combining exercise and play, patients have better outcomes and faster results.  Action Kids Physical Therapy is located at 1801 N. HISPANIC CHAMBER 2010 BUSINESS REFERENCES ARE HERE

The Harlingen Hispanic Chamber of Commerce proudly announces the completion of its 2010 Business Reference.  The reference guide is available to all members and includes a complete listing of HHCOC members alphabetically and categorically.  The business reference also highlights Harlingen's workforce, economy, transporation, schools, and health care.

PARENTING - TALKING TO TEENS ABOUT DRUGS IN SPANISH

Spanish-speaking parents uncertain how to initiate discussions about the dangers of drug and alcohol can find the tools they need on a new website.  The Partnership for A Drug Free America has launched Habla Con Tus Hijos, the first-of-its-kind Spanish language web resource to encourage open, hoest conversations, between parents and children.  At www.HablaConTusHijos.org , parents can download free Spanish-language resources such as "The Talk Kit" and "How to Teach Your Kids to Turn Down Drugs".  Parents can also find an informative chart of the drugs most commonly abused by teens.  Research shows that kids who learn about the rists of drugs from their parents are up to 50 perecent less likely to use drugs than those who do not get that crucial message at home.  Source: HISPANIC Magazine

100 TREES FOR 100 YEARS

In honor of the centennial celebrations in San Benito and Harlingen, Simmons Oak Farms will be donating 100 live oak trees to deserving public and private organizations.

Schools, churches, public entities, and not-for-profit organizations in the Harlingen/San Benito area are eligible to apply.  The donated trees will range from 12 to 18 feet tall.  They will be available for installation in February, the month designated as All Valley Arbor Month by the Valley Proud Environmental Council.  Donation recipients are expected to install, stake and maintain the tree(s) they receive.

TOP 10 NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

New Year's is the only holiday that celebrates the passage of time.  Perhaps that's why as the final seconds of the year tick away, we become introspective.  Inevitably, that introspection turns to thoughts of self-improvement and the annual ritual of making resolutions, which offer the first of many important tools for remaking ourselves.  The following list is the result of our extensive survey, which consists of over 300,000 responses worldwide.

1. Lose Weight and Get in Better Physical Shape - Physical activity builds physical vitality.  With every year of your life, you have more to gain from being physically active; as your age-related risks of chronic disease increase, regular exercise generally slows or reverses that trend.
2. Stick to A Budget - It's been said that the best defense is a good offense.  Developing and sticking to a realistic budget is a brilliant offensive move as it prevents overspending and ensures peace of mind.
3. Debt Reduction - One of the first things you ahve to do before any debt can be eliminated is to stop using charge accounts.  If you contiue to use the accounts you are only fueling the problem, and building on it, not solving it.
4. Enjoy More Quality Time with Family and Friends - More and more people are resolving to spend more quality time with family and friends this year.  This means you must consciously decid to actively and purposely work on improving your family situation every day.
5. Find My Soul Mate - Romance is alive and wll as more and more people are looking for that special someone, their soul mate who lights their fire, the ONE whom they love unequivocally and who shares ther world view.
   
6. Quit Smoking - Becoming a non-smoker is probably one of the best decisions you can ever make, and isa life changing as well as a life saving decision.
7. Find a Better Job - A new year provides a sense of getting a free do-over, so you can try again and get it right.  Many people resolve to find better jobs or to take a new approach to the jobs they've already got.
8. Learn Something New - People throughout the world are realizing that a strong resolve to lifelong learning is more than just education and training beyond formal schooling.
9. Volunteer and Help Others - A popular, non-selfish New Year's resolution, volunteerism can take many forms such as spending time helping out at your local library, mentoring a child, or building a house to name a few.
10. Get Organized - Resolve this year to plan your days, reduce interruptions, clean off your desk, say "No", and make detailed lists.
